Config Item Search
Hi otrs community!
Is it possible to search CI elements without selecting CI class? For a exmaple: I want to find *all* CI elements (computers, network, sowtware etc) where owner is John.
count me in for that feature

Hi,
There is no such feature in OTRS yet.
Instead if enabling this for CMDB only we have currently a kind of internal discussion about implementing a cached fulltext search covering all content of OTRS. It should include Tickets, FAQ, CIs, Changes, Workorders, Files, Appointments, etc. There is no bit of code or document yet and no schedule - but the idea is born.
If you are willing to help to speed up the process please feel free to contact sales@otrs.com for individual development on a commercial base, it might be that your code will become standard!
What do you actually think about the idea? We could think about something similar to the Spotlight search ;-)

Hi Nils, This is a very good idea. We have had a discussion at our yearly IT-Meeting about documentation. We decided to use a wiki instead of OTRS for our FAQs because of the bad search engine. I think many of the OTRS-customers have the wish for a better searchengine. Till yet there is also no chance to search for warranty dates without specifying a day or month within the CMDB. I think this is a very important step for the future of OTRS.

Hi,
I was surprised that I couldn't find any enhancement bug for this. I thought that a CI search over all classes would be a common wish, for example for IP addresses or asset numbers.
I love the idea of a fulltext search over all OTRS content since we always try to find ticket numbers or FAQs over the current fulltext search by mistake - it's so intuitive.
But I'm a bit afraid that this would need a long time to implement. I hoped that a more powerful CI search would be available in ITSM 3.0 or 3.1 :( The search per class is really an unpleasant limitation.
Anyway, the fulltext search is clearly the superior concept and would really be a great feature. This would be worth waiting for.
I would be very glad to read more about this on the mailing list or in an enhancement bug.
Regards
Alexander
