there's only one answer to that: trending. There's no way we can guess that for you, it depends on so many factors. The same as for the OTRS hardware sizing; it's very difficult to do. Even if you have the # of tickets you expect, it depends on lots of factors; for instance the average ticket size and the # of articles per ticket. In my experience platform choice (linux or windows) is not that much of an issue with sizing, a 4core server with 8GB memory will be able to generally the same load wether it runs Windows or Linux. At least the difference is not very significant. In general it's always very nice to have so much RAM to be able to hold the database in memory. Also, virtualizing a database server means a 30-40% performance penalty. (source: Brian Aker) Typically many companies still want to deploy on virtualized servers only; nowadays. But if I had the choice I would prefer a bare metal database server, because of this reason.
