Also, I have tried to run ther backup script and then restore on new server running CentOS 6.2, and it bombs out on the restore asking for the password. ****

I tried putting the database password into the script and no go.****
Did you try rolling back the yum update that changed your perl version? When yum/rpm needs to update config files it will make .rpmnew and .rpmsave files. You migth need to replace or merge settings from those files
