Even worst I just found out that 1. requesting a pop3 email box will be refused 2. smtp access is closed/blocked
Really this is just sheer laziness. It is relatively easy to deploy limited and secure pop3 access using MS exchange. The pop3 server supplied with exchange is questionable (you may need them to play with it a little before it works ok for OTRS) but access to it can be very tighly controlled. They are just dodging the workload; produce a cost/benefit scenario for the cost of making the change to AD and exchange versus the cost of buying an IMAP compliant ticketing system!
