Apparently, this is an issue caused by using the Perl module
Net::IMAP::Simple with an incompatible version of
Net::IMAP::Simple::SSL - see also:

We want to use IMAP for incoming mails, but fetching mails stop with the following error. POP3 works fine.
Any ideas?
