Is the only thing needed to use OpenTRS with a Postgresql backend a successful translation of OpenTRS-schema.mysql.sql ?
Theoretically, yes. You can create OpenTRS-schema.{mysql|db2|oracle|postgresql| mssql|hypersonic}.sql with OpenTRS-schema.xml (database definition) and Torque (http://jakarta.apache.org/turbine/turbine-2/howto/torque-howto.html). OpenTRS is currently tested with MySQL. No other databases.
In other words, are there any functions/schemas or other definitions that are MySQL dependent?
There are no "MySQL-only-functions" in use.
If not, is anyone using the currrent otrs-0.5-BETA5.tar.gz (which is tar'ed but apparently not gzipped) with Postgresql?
I don't know this. Just in case, I created a OpenTRS-schema.postgresql.sql from the current OpenTRS-schema.xml: http://otrs.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/otrs/install/database/OpenTRS-schema.post...
