Probably by default your mysql server does not accept non-local connections. They explain how to allow it here: http://www.zytrax.com/tech/survival/mysql.html#commands-users
After that, restart mysql and try a command line connection from the other box like this:
mysql -u user -p password -h host_where_mysql_is

Subject: [otrs] I'm installing OTRS 2.4.5 on a server and my database (MySQL) on another server. The two servers are OpenSuse 11.2.In the first installation steps of the Screen, "Create Database (2 / 4)" I specify what the server database,
but errors occur when progress in the "Message: Can not connect to database, read comment!.Can you connect to the MySQL server from the OTRS server? Does the mysql server name resolve? Are there any firewalls involved that could be blocking the connection? What was the comment?
