i tried installing the libz by hand, but that didnt work out at all. any suggestions on that?

Use the RPM for SuSE 8.x and install all required RPM modules (like perl-Msql-Mysql-modules, perl-DBI, ...) and it will work. You don't need to installe modules from cpan.org (via "perl -MCPAN -e shell;") if you use SuSE Linux.
