[otrs] Users groups vs. Customer IDs?

I am having trouble getting my head around user groups and customer IDs. Does anyone have a simple scheme of when you'd use one over the other or both? Whenever I ?think? I have a good understanding of this... I realize I don't. (Must be a sign of getting old :-S ) tia LQ
