Quick question: If you go to Admin -> SQL Box and run the following query, what's the result?

SELECT preferences_value FROM user_preferences where preferences_key='UserEmail' and user_id=1

In case the result is an invalid email address, that could be the cause of those "the message cannot be delivered to root @ localhost" messages.
