Huh? Last I checked most cell phones used WAP browsers and can't access normal HTML pages. They use WML instead. Thats possible already. OTRS is a normal web application which cann be accessed via a browser. The browsers of mobile phones should be able to work with the web interface, I know no reason why this shouldn't work. You can even switch to another HTML layout called Lite, so the interface is more concise and more useable with browsers of mobile phones, data traffic is reduced.

Hmmm... Phones that support or include HTML browsers have been available in the European and Asian marketplace for quite time. U.S. mobile phone infrastructure is somewhat behind the rest of the world but there is support in some places. To say that one can always access otrs via a phone based browser is probably not strictly true. Yes, almost all smartphones (particularly those using Symbian Palm and Microsoft OSs), come with HTML browser support of some kind, and it is probably best to use the lite template on GPRS with these types of phone. But mileage does vary, and how good the support is does vary between different models somewhat. Main problem is really dealing with the different screen resolutions and how the browser renders the screen. On a SonyEricsson p9xx/p800 with Opera results are usable but not entirely satisfactory (would not recommend doing this with standard browser on the phone). A Nokia 9500 gives quite a good result (particularly over WiFI). Personal view is the full interface may not be completely appropriate because of this issue and other interface issues, and a custom template may be required for each phone model or interface type (e.g. UIQ or series 90 for Symbian phones). BTW Not tried with a Palm or MS based device. This is really a subset of the whole problem of using otrs with handheld devices. More standard phones (e.g. Symbian based series 60) are a bit more limited in terms of screen size, browser functionality and interface. These again can vary significantly between models. There are probably four further basic approaches to get some sort of support. 1) Write a WML based version of the interface. This may sidestep interface issues, but WML is less functional than HTML and the functionality of the interface may need to be altered to the extent that a WML version would significantly change look and feel. 2) Use a WML to HTML gateway. This would translate the HTML to WML externally to otrs and probably retain most aspects of the feel but could end up being rather clunky. Some service providers do use such gateways by default for WAP access to web sites with somewhat mixed results. Using your own gateway would allow closer control on access. 3) On a java enabled phone find out whether a java browser is available, and acquire and use that. 4) Write a J2ME applet. Probably most flexible option but would require good knowledge of phone UI. There would be issues with certification and port support on different phone networks, (and of course absolutely useless on phones without java support). Might be worth someone putting together a list of mobile phones/networks otrs works well with. On Tue, 2005-05-24 at 08:16 -0700, Hal Berenson wrote:

I tried to access our OTRS system via my phone last night, didn't work. My phone displayed a message that it could not display the page. I have a Motorola V600. -- Wes Plate Automatic Duck, Inc. http://www.wesplate.com http://www.automaticduck.com

Hello, We are currently setting up OTRS and we are impressed with what it can do. I have a few questions I hope you can help me on. Firstly we are doing some work in connection to OTRS to a backend oracle database - we are working with fields at the moment. Has anyone seen the new version 2.0.0 beta version yet? Is there a big difference in the customer fields or the way they work? I have downloaded it but not yet got around to installing it? Does anyone have any details or experience of importing data from an oracle database? And finally - within the customer files we are trying to customise them to have drop down menus and radio buttons - has anyone done this? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? Many Thanks for your thoughts Richard _________________________________________________________________ Winks & nudges are here - download MSN Messenger 7.0 today! http://messenger.msn.co.uk

Agreed. So far one person replied that the Blueberry 7250 works well. -- Wes Plate Automatic Duck, Inc. http://www.automaticduck.com

You will get access with a Sony Ericsson using the Opera Browser on p9xx. How usable this is a moot point due to screen size and aspect ratio issues. Nokia 9500 is fine. Probably be OK with 9300 as this is effectively a 9500 without Wi-Fi or camera. Nokia 9210 will load it at about 9.6kbs a second (so very slow). Unfortunately factors effecting performance (hence usability) are not just down to the phone, but also to how the service supplier provides data services. Using the lite theme will probably help performance, but as far as I know there is no mechanism to associate a particular theme with either the location or type of device making the connection. So unless one wants to use the lite theme for all locations one would have to manually reset the theme each one accessed otrs from a mobile device. On Sun, 2005-06-12 at 07:03 -0700, Wes Plate wrote:

I just got a Treo 650 and it seems to handle OTRS well. I am going to make a simpler theme, though. It will make loading faster and navigation easier. -- Wes Plate Automatic Duck, Inc. http://www.automaticduck.com

Cool :)! If you have made the theme, would you sent it to me or info@otrs.de? We could integrate this for later releases. Thanks a lot for your help! Best regards, Christian -- ((otrs.de)) :: OTRS GmbH :: Norsk-Data-Str. 1 :: 61352 Bad Homburg http://www.otrs.de/ :: Manage your communication!

Actually, the Lite theme is pretty good for my purposes, I'm just going through and commenting out sections of the interface I don't need access to (like "Is Ticket Answered" and "Spell Check"...) -- Wes Plate Automatic Duck, Inc. http://www.automaticduck.com
