Move OTRS 3.2.9 to other server with different OS

Hi all, We have OTRS 3.2.9 running on an OpenSUSE 11.2 server, but we want to have OTRS running on a different server. The preferred OS for us is Windows, but I don't know if running OTRS on Windows (2003/2008) is as reliable as running on Linux, so my first question is, what is the best option for installing OTRS on, Windows or Linux? We have 2 sysadmins over here, both Microsoft schooled, but we also use Linux once in a while... Second question is, is it easy to move OTRS to another server? Is it just backing up and restoring on another server, or are there more steps involved? Is there a step by step guide? The best option is the one you can support. The general consensus is
probably that Linux would be less problematic over time, especially via
upgrade paths, but that's not to say people haven't had success on Windows.
"is it easy to move OTRS to another server?"
Depends. Conceptually, it's ... install the same version on another box,
test it, copy the files from A to B, check/set permissions on files,
database dump A, database restore B, test.
In practice, it's probably a bit more difficult, but by how much? Depends
on what you encounter. You should make sure your cron jobs don't grab
emails at A and B after/during conversion.

I run a stable v3.2.3 on Windows 2008 R2 with 20+ agents and 100+ customers
always connected in a virtual machine running on Hyper-V on a 4 year old
real machine. OTRS is stable but sometime you can run into surprises when
you try to upgrade (search the mailing list to see my recent failed
adventure trying to upgrade to 3.2.8). The reason why Windows is more prone
to unstable configurations is the fact that the OTRS installer deploys the
whole stack of required software (Apache, Perl, Cronw, etc.). This means
that even between revisions, a major change in this software stack can hit
you with a very low level stability problem.
Running on Linux has several advantages (most OTRS deployments are made
this way => more help likely available and the software stack required by
OTRS likely performs better on Linux) but these are not enough - in my
opinion - to offset a strong investment in Windows admin skills / toolsets
(monitoring, backup, etc.). If this is your case then you should start
running on Windows and when you'll run into performance issues then
question again if it's worth migrating to Linux.
