Hello, I am new to OTRS and I am trying to get my test environment stable before rolling it out to our technical support team for help desk operations. Apache is exiting unexpectedly after approximately 3 hours when I have two agent clients connected to the server with the QueueView page displayed. The page is refreshing on a 2 minute interval in each Internet Explorer window. If I don't have any agents connected then Apache does not exit unexpectedly. I have not changed the Apache configuration from what the installer configured. The Apache error log is below from the time Apache was started till the time it exited. I did a search on Google and it looks like other users have had similar issues, but all the text is in German and all I can make out is the Apache logs. Hopefully someone has a solution. I have installed OTRS 2.1.7 using the installer "otrs-2.1.7-001-win32.exe" into the following VMWare Server environment. - Windows Server 2003 R2 - 768 MB of RAM - 100 Mb LAN - 20 GB C: drive [Wed Jun 27 12:04:33 2007] [notice] Apache/2.2.4 (Win32) mod_perl/2.0.3-dev Perl/v5.8.8 configured -- resuming normal operations [Wed Jun 27 12:04:33 2007] [notice] Server built: Jan 9 2007 23:17:20 [Wed Jun 27 12:04:33 2007] [notice] Parent: Created child process 2028 [Wed Jun 27 12:04:43 2007] [notice] Child 2028: Child process is running [Wed Jun 27 12:04:43 2007] [notice] Child 2028: Acquired the start mutex. Did some searching on bugzilla for this and found this bug. Looks like we need to download the new (older perl) build (2.2.1-002-win32.exe) for me.

Hi @ all
We found the reason of this problem. A bug in ActivePerl 5.8.8.820 was
the
reason of the error.
We downgraded ActivePerl to version 5.8.8.819 and it works fine now!
Affected Packages:
-otrs-2.0.5-001-win32.exe
-otrs-2.1.7-001-win32.exe
-otrs-2.2.1-001-win32.exe
Improved Packages:
-otrs-2.0.5-002-win32.exe
-otrs-2.1.7-002-win32.exe
-otrs-2.2.1-002-win32.exe
Best regards,

You could also try setting MaxRequestsPerChild in httpd.conf to "0" this will prevent the process from being restarted after X requests. The only disadvantages are:
Setting MaxRequestsPerChild to a non-zero limit has two beneficial effects:
- it limits the amount of memory that process can consume by (accidental) memory leakage; - by giving processes a finite lifetime, it helps reduce the number of processes when the server load reduces.
So you might want to schedule an Apache service restart maybe once a week, once a day depending on how tidy OTRS is with memory usage. Steve

Hello, This one ended up being a little tricky to solve. In http.conf the setting "MaxRequestsPerChild" is set to zero. However at the end of http.conf is an "include" statement that points to "<DRIVE>/OTRS/otrs/scripts/apache2-httpd-new.include.conf". In the file "apache2-httpd-new.include.conf" the parameter "MaxRequestsPerChild" is set to 400. I have set this to zero and the issue went away. Thanks for posting this Frank. We were suffering from the same reached MaxRequestPerChild problem and downgraded to ActivePerl 5.8.8.819 and haven't had Apache crash in two days. nice.
