Download mail POP/IMAP and leave a copy on the server

Dear all, I've searched a while regarding how to allow OTRS to download emails from the server and still retain a copy there, leaving it unread. So the questions are: 1- Which is preferable? POP or IMAP? We're using Google mail for the help desk account. 2- What exact steps are to be taken to work around this? Do I have to edit a .pm file, and how? Or what exactly should be done? We're running a Fedora 14 machine, and will migrate to a CentOS 5.5 later... basically running Linux. Your help and support are very highly appreciated guys! Thanks and Best Regards, Sergani. -- Best Regards, Muhammad El-Sergani.

Hello Muhammad,
If you are using GMail, use it with IMAP. This way if you (OTRS) delete a mail from the Inbox, it will be still visible in the Archived items. Hope this helps.
Best,
Gergely

Thanks Gergely,
Well, this is one solution, but the problem remains, that we use another
mail client, Thunderbird namely, to download our emails on a PC, and hence,
I can't get the archived items.

No human should be accessing the OTRS email account. It is purposefully
designed to download all mail from the account permanently.

Thanks Gerald,
Sometimes you have different scenarios, and this is one of them.
So I'm asking in general, how could one download emails from a certain mail
account to OTRS, and still leave a copy on the server?
Thanks all in advance.

Muhammad El-Sergani.

What you could do:
Forward the e-mail from box1 to box2 (i.e. with a rule in your mailclient or on your server), leave box1 for use with your local client and use box2 within OTRS.

Of course you can. There is a folder named [GMail], and in that a folder called All mail, those are your Archived items.

Thanks all.
I've tried a couple of things, and my Thunderbird mailbox turned messy.
I know man would say "Don't use OTRS if you don;t want it to download your
emails bla bla bla", please, just go away!
If anyone knows of a good way to alter OTRS' behavior regarding downloading
emails and keeping them on the server, please go ahead and tell us.. this
could be anything up to script editing.
OTRS is great, OTRS is absolutely one of the best, and I'm definitely
sticking with it!
Best Regards,
Muhammad El-Sergani.
